Target audience: Physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and physical education teachers.
Instructor: Ulrika Myhr, specialist in pediatric physiotherapy with extensive experience working with children with DCD, author of the book ‘Sittande barn’ (Sitting Children).
Almost every class has a child with DCD-related challenges. Children with DCD have motor difficulties, sometimes making it impossible to sit still and stabilize their bodies. At times, it means they are clumsy, fearful, and require assistance to participate in play and sports. The motor difficulties affect learning, daily functions, and the child’s self-esteem. Children with DCD are often bullied.
The first day of the course is theoretical, and day 2 involves practical aspects with group work in the gymnasium. You also gain knowledge about what one should be able to do at different ages and strategies for learning new skills. With knowledge, you can help children succeed and enable them to find the joy and self-esteem to participate in sports and play.
There is a great need to understand and be able to help children with DCD and provide assistance to them early on. This training is intended for those working with children as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, or physical education teachers.
In the training, you will, among other things, learn:
- Basics of motor development and how they are affected in DCD.
- Symptoms of 2 different types of DCD.
- How do we improve motor skills in children with DCD?
- Assessment and diagnosis.
- Impact on everyday functions and learning.
- School situation – ability to sit still, need for movement, physical education and crafts, grades.
- Participation in leisure activities – strategies for success.
- Impact on emotions and self-esteem.
